Shazam
Shazam (the other Captain Marvel) was the second LEGO-inspired statue I created in 2019. Since the lightning bolt on his chest is an important part of the character’s costume, I wanted to add lights to make it glow.
The lightning bolt was made in a few different layers. Using my paper template, I cut out more and more of the template to create each layer. The first step was to cut a hole in the chest for the lights to shine through.
Using a few layers of foam, I built up the area around the hole to try to match the thickness of the Plastazote foam bolt. Plastazote is similar to EVA foam but it allows light to filter through the foam. This was my first attempt using Plastazote. Using the cut out cardboard bolt, I traced out the cardboard “bolt” with tabs that would attach to the inside of the chest.
I added a layer of aluminum foil to help diffuse the light a little more. This piece was then glued inside the chest. A string of LED lights was then wrapped around the edge of the bolt.
The lights in the bolt were then wired to a switch and battery pack in the back of the torso that’s hidden under the cape.
The Plastazote bolt was then lightly painted yellow. It was then placed in the lip around the hole. The final layers of details overlap the edge of the foam bolt to hold it into place.
The rest of the project follows the techniques I’ve used for other statues. The hair was a simple foam shell that slips over the normal foam head piece. unfortunately the cape was not as wide as the ones I’ve made for Loki and Doctor Strange so it didn’t show up well in pictures from the front. The statue appeared at a local movie theater for the opening weekend of the Shazam movie and then later made an appearance at the 2019 Tidewater Comicon. |
