Frostmourne
| Anyone who has spent more than a few hours in World of Warcraft in the last 8 years should know and fear Frostmourne and it’s owner the Lich King.
I made this prop to go along with my son’s LEGO Lich King costume. |
 I used the 3D model viewer on wowhead.com to get a snap shot of Frostmourne and used a vector graphics program to trace out a pattern for the sword. I came back to the 3D model viewer several times to get different views of the sword throughout the build. |
 The first step was to sandwich a wooden dowel rod between a couple of layers of white TNT Cosplay foam. I then used a rotary tool to shape the blade of the sword. The dowel rod was later inserted into a PVC pipe for a sturdier handle. |
 I bought a EL tape strip from the internet to make the runes on the sword glow. This was the first time I’ve used an EL tape. I decided to hide the battery pack under the skulls on the handle. |
 To get the runes on the sword, I added a 2mm craft foam layer over the EL tape. Because of the width and length of the EL tape and running it through the sword to the other side, I had to make small adjustments near the tip of the black section of the rune ‘mask”. You can see the mask doesn’t quite match the original traced image. Before attaching the rune “mask” layer to the sword, I mostly cut out the rune pieces but left them barely connected. This prevents spray paint from getting on the EL tape. |

 One side of the handle has horns that wrap to the back side. The skull with the long horns is removable to allow access to the battery pack. I didn’t have a switch on the sword so you have to disconnect the battery pack to turn the lights off. The blue tape is here to hold the skulls in place while I make final adjustment. Later magnets would hold the skull in place. |

 Within each skull are 3 LED lights. These are connected to a 9V battery also hidden in the handle of the sword. |

 The pummel of the sword is just a few rings of foam glued together ove a PVC cap and shaped with a rotary tool. |

 With the paint done on the sword, it was time to carefully remove the mostly cut runes out to expose the EL tape. |
